Functional Breathing Retraining

Restoring healthy functional breathing is fundamental to good health...

Beth, an internationally accredited practitioner of the Buteyko Breathing Method, and an Advanced Oxygen Advantage instructor, first came across Buteyko Breathing Method about 10 years ago; witnessing the incredible health benefits people experience after attending a workshop. This got her attention & led her to study with the world’s leading Buteyko Breathing practitioner, Patrick McKeown & Mim Biem, one of Australia’s foremost breathing educators. Due to the awe inspiring health improvements (mental & physical) achieved by restoring functional breathing, she went on to complete the advanced certification of the Oxygen Advantage breathworks method. The two pillars of Oxygen Advantage are: 


1) Functional breathing - to enhance general health & well being; and address any symptoms of dis-ease; and

2) High Altitude Simulation Training - to take physical and sports performance to the next level


Beth is passionate about helping people overcome chronic conditions including asthma, sleep apnoea, snoring, anxiety, panic attacks, reflux, hypertension and irritable bowel syndrome by teaching them the Buteyko Breathing method. This method, along with the Oxygen Advantage breathworks method, go beyond restoring health & wellbeing; they are also a fantastic way to proactively maintain or enhance health & wellbeing, and athletic performance.


Vida's one-on-one breath training sessions are offered virtually and in-person. To get best results a series of four sessions is recommended. One-on-one consultations are highly tailored to each individual, taking into account your current health status, the symptoms you are experiencing, your personal health goals, and your current routine, schedule. If desired, a naturopathic approach can be combined. 

Vida offers group courses of up to 12, and we welcome enquiries regarding arranging a group workshop series for private groups of 3 or more.  Courses are taught via video/online sessions and via in-person/face-to-face sessions (Twin Cities, MN).

What is the Buteyko Breathing Method?

"The perfect man breathes as if he is not breathing” Lao Tzu (circa 400BC)

 

Named after Russian medical researcher & doctor, Konstantin Buteyko, Buteyko Breathing is essentially, breathing retraining. Dysfunctional breathing is extremely common & has a huge negative impact on our health. Signs your breathing might be less than ideal include: mouth breathing, frequent yawning, sighing, sniffing, waking with a dry mouth and snoring. Conditions associated with dysfunctional breathing include: asthma, sinusitis, allergies, hayfever, chronically blocked nose, sleep apnoea, snoring, reflux, constipation or diarrhoea and anxiety.  Both adults & children suffering from these symptoms or conditions can be significantly helped by applying the Buteyko method. The way we breathe influences functioning of our airways,  circulation, cardiovascular function, digestive function, our nervous system and stress tolerance, oxygen release to all our cells, and of course the health of our respiratory system.


What to expect at a Buteyko Breathing Workshop...

The Buteyko Breathing method is taught via a serious of four 120 minute group workshops, with homework and daily practice to improve breathing patterns. The first three session are usually carried out over a weekend; or held approximately a week apart. The fourth session is then scheduled for 2 to 4 weeks later. The breathing centre in the brain will, via neuroplasticity, adapt to functional breathing, improving your health now, and for the long term. Attending a workshop can be helpful for anyone with the below health challenges (additional information can be found by clicking on the below links): 


  • Respiratory: asthma, rhinitis, hayfever & other allergies, chronic bronchitis
  • Neurological: Anxiety, stress and panic attacks
  • Childhood development: dental health, craniofacial development and ADHD
  • Sleep disordered breathing: insomnia, snoring, sleep apnea & other issues associated with night time mouth breathing
  • Cardiovascular health: hypertension, hypocapnia; prevention and recovery from heart attack or cardiac arrest



In-person (Twin Cities, MN) and virtual one-on-one consultations and group workshop are available. There is great flexibility in terms of the structure, to work in with what is best for you and/or your group depending on your specific health concerns, goals, and schedule. 



Group Workshop Enquiries

Group workshops: please get into contact to register your interest. We offer group workshops of varying structures, and regularly will tailor them to a specific group's goals, needs, members, availability, etc. There is great flexibility available. Options include a one-off session of several hours; a one-day or weekend workshop, through to a series of workshops held weekly over a month. This is a great option for Corporate clients, and other organizations and groups. 


One-on-one tuition: $160 per 75 minute session. Generally 3 to 4 sessions is recommended. Sessions are highly tailored to the individual, and you have the option of incorporating naturopathic recommendations for a truly holistic approach.  Email/phone support is included between sessions.
